The Three Chimneys Location Map - click to enlarge

The journey to the Isle of Skye off the coast of north west Scotland is one of the most spectacular in the World – no matter which way you travel. The majority of visitors to the island travel by private car, crossing the Skye Bridge from the mainland at Kyle of Lochalsh. The journey takes you through some of the most beautiful countryside, with breath-taking views around every corner. Staggering mountain scenery, expansive lochs, steep-sided glens, ancient castles, thick forests and hillsides abundant with wild flowers in spring and summer, will not fail to surprise you all along the way. Whatever the weather, whatever the time of year, the scenery is dramatic and never-to-be-forgotten.

By road. You reach Kyle of Lochalsh and the toll-free Skye Bridge, via Fort William from Glasgow or Dalwhinnie from Edinburgh. It takes one hour to drive from the Skye Bridge to The Three Chimneys at Colbost. The road journey from Edinburgh, Glasgow or Aberdeen can take up to 6 hours. From Inverness, the journey takes between 2 and 3 hours. You can choose to travel by Loch Ness, or via Achnasheen from Inverness.

By ferry. Car ferries cross to the Isle of Skye to Armadale at the south end, from the Port of Mallaig on the mainland. This service is much more limited during the Winter months and is often very busy during the Summer months, when pre-booking is advisable.

There is also the privately-run ferry from Glenelg on the mainland to Kylerhea on Skye. This is a small car ferry, typical of the type used in days gone by. The drive to Glenelg is spectacular, taking travellers over the Mam Ratagan Pass from Sheil Bridge on the main A87. From Kylerhea on Skye the single-track road rejoins the A87 a few miles before Broadford.

Uig on the Isle of Skye is the main ferry connection to and from Tarbert and Lochmaddy on Harris and North Uist in the Outer Hebrides.

By train. Main line train services run from all major stations in the UK to Inverness and Fort William. It is possible to take the scenic railway from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh station, the nearest point to the island. There is also a connection from Fort William to Mallaig where a ferry runs to Skye. There are no railways on the Isle of Skye.

Flights. The nearest airport to the Isle of Skye is at Inverness. It takes approximately 3 hours to drive from Inverness Airport to The Three Chimneys. Flights into Inverness are possible from quite a number of main airports throughout the UK, including London, Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh and Glasgow. There is no airport on the island although there is an airstrip at Broadford which is not in full public use at this time.

Car Hire. Those flying into Inverness, Edinburgh or Glasgow can arrange car hire from the airport through most of the well-known companies. Car hire is also available from Inverness of Fort William train stations. It is also possible to hire cars from Kyle of Lochalsh and on the island itself, although this is a more limited service.

Helicopters. Personal trips to The Three Chimneys by helicopter are a wonderful way to view Scotland and the Isle of Skye from an entirely different perspective. Guests have been known to land by helicopter on the strip of ground between The Three Chimneys and the seashore in front of the restaurant. Occasionally, someone may arrive for lunch in this way – usually for an extremely special occasion!

Seaplane. Loch Lomond seaplanes offer a unique opportunity for private flights to the Isle of Skye, landing the seaplane at Dunvegan Jetty and travelling round to The Three Chimneys by taxi from there.

Yachts can drop anchor in Loch Dunvegan right opposite The Three Chimneys, but there is no official mooring, nor jetty. It is possible to row ashore to the restaurant but the seashore is stoney with small boulders and seaweed. Official moorings are available at Dunvegan Pier and it is possible to arrange a local taxi for the onward journey to Colbost.

Taxis are available from all the main towns and villages on the Isle of Skye, including the local service from Dunvegan.

Bus Service Public transport as far as Colbost is very limited. There is a limited, but regular bus service between Portree and Dunvegan. The service between Dunvegan and Glendale, passing Colbost is infrequent. There are daily bus services and connections between Uig and Portree to all the main towns in Scotland, including Inverness, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
